Frequently Asked Questions
How does PhonEnforcer Work?
PhonEnforcer is a program (or “application”) that runs on your GPS enabled smart phone. This patent pending application gives you a reliable and easy way to prevent cell phone use when the user is driving. PhonEnforcer turns off the phone when the phone is traveling more than 9 miles per hour (or a speed selected by the phone owner). We use sophisticated programming to determine the speed of travel and to turn off the phone. The cell phone is turned off so there are no driving distractions. No texts, no calls, no checking old messages, no games, no cell phone distractions. Simple and very effective.
("Turn off", when used with Android and some Windows phones, means network connections are turned off. Voice, email, text, and internet are disabled.)
How can I be sure the cell phone user doesn't modify PhonEnforcer so the phone can be used when driving?
Users are ingenious. But, so is PhonEnforcer. Our exclusive Circumvention Prevention process notifies you if the cell phone user changes any of the program controls. If, for example, the user changes the phone turn off speed, you receive text/email messages telling you changes have been made. These features are available in Standard and above packages.
What if I want to allow legal cell phone use, such as when the cell phone user is a passenger?
You can easily allow legal use of the cell phone. Just have the cell phone user manually turn off PhonEnforcer (in Standard and above packages). And, YOU STILL HAVE CONTROL. If PhonEnforcer is turned off manually, you receive text/email messages telling you the phone control has been turned off. You can then contact the phone immediately if the phone control should be on. Or, you can discuss the situation later based on the information you receive and the phone user's activities.
What if the phone needs to be used in an emergency?
While it is never safe to use a cell phone while driving, the cell phone can be used in an emergency. In virtually all emergency situations, a driver should pull over and stop before using the phone. The driver then simply turns on the phone, and the phone works normally. If it is impossible to pull over and stop, the driver can still make an emergency call or text. The driver can turn on the phone and then turn off the PhonEnforcer application (in Standard and above packages). This allows normal use of the phone. Note: For some phones when it is impossible to stop, the driver can turn off Airplane mode and then turn off the PhonEnforcer application (in Standard and above packages).
Why can't I enter email addresses on my Android phone?
PhonEnforcer sends text messages only on Android phones.
Why do I always receive texts when PhonEnforcer turns off the phone, but I don't always receive emails?
Texts are sent immediately by PhonEnforcer. Emails (if your phone normally sends emails) can incur slight delays before being sent. If the phone turns off before the emails are sent, the emails will be lost.
Why don't I receive email messages immediately?
Some email services do not deliver emails immediately. Check your email services provider's delivery time. You might also check your phone settngs to see if the phone is requesting immediate email delivery. The emails are sent immediately by your phone.
Will I get all the text messages on all my phones set up to receive PhonEnforcer messages?
PhonEnforcer sends text messages to all the text addresses stored in the user's phone. In rare instances, not all text messages are received by all the phones. This is due to phone/network connection issues. PhonEnforcer does continue to work properly, and subsequent messages will give you the information to be sure the phone is not being used while driving.
I am not receiving messages that PhonEnforcer is turning off the phone. I know the phone has been traveling faster than the turn off speed. How do I fix this?
Blackberry: PhonEnforcer automatically turns off the phone when the phone travels faster than the turn off speed. PhonEnforcer messages are automatically sent when PhonEnforcer turns off the phone, or if its settings are modified. Check the PhonEnforcer settings by clicking on the application icon. If all these settings are correct, the phone settings have been altered. Rebooting the phone is required to restore all necessary settings. Reboot is required even if you get the message "Permissions are Allow" prior to reboot. We recommend investigating why the phone settings were altered.
Android: PhonEnforcer automatically turns off the phone when the phone travels faster than the turn off speed. PhonEnforcer messages are automatically sent when PhonEnforcer turns off the phone, or if its settings are modified. Check the PhonEnforcer settings by clicking on the application icon. If all these settings are correct, check the phone> Settings, Security and Location. GPS satellites must be enabled. Also, Force Stop must not be invoked. Clicking on the PhonEnforcer icon will dismiss Force Stop. We recommend investigating why the settings were changed or why Force Stop was invoked.
Windows: PhonEnforcer automatically turns off the phone when the phone travels faster than the turn off speed. PhonEnforcer messages are automatically sent when PhonEnforcer turns off the phone, or if its settings are modified. Check the PhonEnforcer settings by clicking on the application icon. If all these settings are correct, check the phone to be sure the GPS is on (not 911 only). GPS must be enabled. It may occasionally be necessary to turn the phone off and back on and/or turn PhonEnforcer off and back on. We recommend turning the phone off/on daily.
What messages indicate the phone user might be trying to use the phone while driving?
Be sure you receive the message "PhonEnforcer turned off phone" when you know the user is driving. If you are not receiving this message, first review the section above. Messages generated by changing settngs should always be reviewed. There are also some messages or combinations of messages which indicate the user may be trying to use the phone while driving. To see details/examples of these messages, click here.
I can not turn PhonEnforcer off or on. What causes that?
You can normally turn on/off PhonEnforcer on the home screen in the Standard and above packages. On some phones, If the GPS location is off, you can not turn the application off/on. Change the GPS location to on and the off/on setting will work properly.
Does PhonEnforcer start when the phone is powered on?
PhonEnforcer generally starts when the phone is powered on. For Blackberry, if PhonEnforcer was off when the phone was powered off, PhonEnforcer must be manually started. Always look for the message "PhonEnforcer is on" to be sure you are protected.
I got the message "PhonEnforcer turned off phone" when the phone was not moving at driving speed. Why?
PhonEnforcer uses GPS data to turn off the phone. Occasionally, GPS data provided by the network is corrupted or inaccurate. When accurate data is subsequently received, PhonEnforcer may calculate the phone has been moving at higher than the turn off speed, so the phone is turned off.
I occasionally get the message "GPS data is not available. PhonEnforcer is not working properly." What should I do?
While this could indicate a problem, the first step is to make sure you are getting the best GPS data. We recommend installing a "GPS assist" or "fast GPS" program. These programs help your phone find GPS faster. You may need to run the program periodically to keep the GPS assist working at it's best.
